Bill Russell Makes NBA History One Last Time
The NBA will honor 11-time champion and all-time great Bill Russell by retiring his No. 6 throughout the league. The NBA star and civil rights pioneer died on July 31 at the age of 88. Russell is the first player to have his jersey number retired across the league. "Permanently retiring his No. 6 across every NBA team ensures that Bill’s transcendent career will always be recognized," Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner. Players who currently wear No. 6, such as LeBron James, may continue to do so. However, the NBA says the number cannot be issued again. Russell was the first Black coach in any of the major US pro sports to win a championship.
