It’s been five decades since astronaut Neil Armstrong took one giant leap for mankind, but it’s still as important as ever. There are dozens of schools across the country named after astronauts like Armstrong, Sally Ride, Buzz Aldrin and more. National enthusiasm for NASA’s moon program brought $500 million to the National Science Foundation specifically for teacher and classroom development. Everything about science education changed during and after the space race, and we’re still feeling the effects to this day. Ohio State University biology professor Steven Rissing Now, with 50 years of accumulated scientific data, NASA’s got another trip to the moon in sight. After that? Mars.
