'Gay Like Me' is the emotional, harrowing love letter to his son, about what it was like for Jackson coming into his own as a gay man in NYC, in a time that didn't full embrace LGBTQ+ people. Richie was inspired to pen his experiences after his teenage son came out as gay paired with Donald Trump being elected as president. He didn't want Gen Z to miss the importance of being proud of your sexual identity, despite what governments say. Jackson's book also touches on the obstacles he specifically faced and the bigger obstacles faced by the LGBTQ+ community. 'Look, being gay is hard. It's harrowing sometimes, but it's a gift. It is the blessing of my life. It's the most important thing about me. We all go through so much. We disappoint our parents. We are battling our government. We are stigmatized by religion. We are bullied in our childhood. And yet we rise and we say, this is me. That is an extraordinary species of people who can go through that.
